How Do I E-File An Electronic Extension?

From the Main Menu of TaxSlayer Pro select:

  • E-File
  • Automatic Electronic Extensions (Form 4868)
  • Create or Edit Extension (Enter the SSN of the client requesting the extension.  If you have already started the tax return and entered personal and financial data, the program will pull the information forward.  If you have not started the tax return, you will be prompted to enter your client’s information.  Once the information is entered, you will be directed to the Electronic Extension Edit Menu.  If you know the Total Tax Liability or Total Payments, you may enter the amounts on lines 2 and 3.  If not, leave these fields blank.)

If your client wants to make an Electronic Payment (Direct Debit) of their tax due, select:

  • Form 4868 Electronic Payment
  • Enter the taxpayer’s bank account information and other requested information.
  • Be sure to enter a payment date of April 15th or sooner to avoid late filing penalties.

* Please Note that filing an extension does not give the taxpayer more time to pay.  If the taxpayer owes money to the IRS, the money is still due on the 15th of April.  The extension only allows the taxpayer extra time to submit their return.

When you are ready to Transmit the Extension, exit to the Extensions Menu and select:

  • Transmit Electronic Extension (The client’s name will appear in the list.)
  • Select Transmit
  • Follow the onscreen prompts to e-file the extension.

The IRS will process the extensions within 24 to 48 hours.  You will pick up the extensions when you Receive Acknowledgements.  To check the status of the extension from the Main Menu of TaxSlayer Pro select:

  • E-File
  • Automatic Electronic Extensions (Form 4868)
  • View Extension Status (The IRS Accept Code will show an acceptance or rejection code.)

Two common Reject Codes are 315 and 316.

315 - Taxpayer's SSN and last name do not match IRS database files.

316 - Spouse's SSN and last name do not match IRS database files.

Double-check the SSN and the last name of the taxpayer and/or spouse and re-transmit the extension.
